An Introduction to Raw
|
If you’ve been buzzing around the edges of the digital photography world, you’ve probably heard of Raw. But what is it? Here we’re going to attempt to give you some basic information about this file format and how it can benefit your photos. The Raw format really is a digital negative. Photos taken in Raw format cannot be immediately viewed on your computer or edited in Paint Shop Pro until it’s been processed. You can use software like Pixmantec’s RawShooter Essentials (a free download from Corel.com) to view and convert your Raw files. So why would anyone add this extra step to his or her digital photography workflow? Raw provides the ultimate control over digital photos, allowing photographers to tweak the settings to produce the exact photo they desire. For example, people who shoot Raw can set the white balance before they start taking pictures, avoiding hard-to-correct colorcasts. Plus, since most camera raw files are 12-bit instead of 8-bit JPEGs, photographers have greater flexibility when correcting exposure errors and making changes to the overall color tones of their photo without a great risk of posterization.
